Deep in the wilderness area of the Cederberg mountains is this little Rhenish Mission Station founded in 1830, latterly under the control of the Moravian Church. It seems that time has almost forgotten this picture postcard thatched whitewashed village, where the missionaries taught their flock millinery, shoemaking, tanning, joinery and thatching. Wuppertal is renowned for its hand-made ‘velskoene’ soft leather shoes and boots in 25 different styles which can be purchased in the little factory shop. The tannin free herbal Rooibos (red bush) tea is grown around here as well as tobacco and fruits such as figs, pomegranates and quinces.
