Northern Cape and Southern Namibia: Challenge in the steppes.

Far from the madding crowds of mass tourism, this tour takes us into an utterly fascinating world. The boundless expanse of the Kalahari steppes, bizarrely looming rock formations and thundering rivers offer a wealth of motorcycling fun, whilst exotic flora and fauna provide many magical moments of natural beauty. we mount our bikes and start out across the Bainskloof-Pass to Citrusdal. Passing along a fertile, luscious green landscape and the beautiful Olifant's River, the tour continues to the first overnight resting point, "The Bath", where we soothe our rattled bones in the hot volcanic pools.

In the following days we cross the wildly romantic landscape of the Cedar Mountains, tour through barren stretches of land into the Oranje River Valley where abundant diamond deposits have been found. Furrowed sand tracks lead us into the Kalahari Gemsbok Park (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park), home to the Kalahari lions and innumerable other wild animals. The landscape resembles a fantasy world: stones, gravel and vast expanses of red sand which gets between your teeth. When the sun dissappears behind the mighty Kalahari dunes, the silhouette of huge herds of gnu and antelope appear on the horizon.

Next morning we ride on to the roaring Augrabies Falls and then along a magnificient route via Kakamas and Pofadder to Klein Pella and the largest date plantation south of the Sahara. Namibia calls! Crossing the border, our trail takes us to the huge Fish River Canyon which winds its way through the craggy Koubis massif. We follow the unsurfaced road southwards, which is lined with cast landscapes. Following narrow roads and the N7, we return to Cape Town via the attractive fishing port of Lambert's Bay, where we take leave of this magnificent tour on the Blouberg Beach.
